Research
Advancing Entagogy, AI mediated learning and future focused educational design.
Belgravia Education is committed to advancing the research base for Entagogy and supporting schools, universities and organisations in understanding how learning develops within AI enabled environments. Our Research Centre unites theory, design and practice to create new models of learning, assessment and system transformation.

1. What Is Entagogy

Entagogy is a systems based educational framework that understands learning as relational, dynamic and co created between humans, tools and environments. Drawing on anthropology, cognitive science, metacognition and AI studies, it provides a way of seeing learning as a meshwork rather than a linear pathway.
Core Principles
-
Learning emerges from relationships, not isolated inputs
-
AI should extend thinking, not replace it
-
Assessment must illuminate process, not only outcomes
-
Systems shape behaviour, so systems must evolve
-
Across learning is the goal of education in complex futures

3. Assessment, Up Along Across and the Future of Assessment

Belgravia Education is currently leading significant work on how assessment can be redesigned for AI-enabled learning. This work applies Jonathan Ingold’s Up, Along and Across framework to understand how learning moves vertically, horizontally and relationally over time.

How We Use Up, Along and Across
-
Up represents accumulation, correctness and conventional progress
-
Along represents development over time and extended tasks
-
Across represents relational thinking, creative transfer, judgment and synthesis
Most school systems capture Up.
Some capture Along.
Almost none capture Across.
Entagogy focuses on making Across visible and measurable.
Why This Matters
AI accelerates Up learning and makes Along learning easier to automate.
Across learning becomes the true site of human intelligence and deep thinking.
Our research is centred on building assessment models that reveal these richer forms of learning.
4. From Theory to Practice
We are actively transforming Entagogy and Ingold’s conceptual models into practical tools that schools and researchers can use.
Current Theory to Practice Work
-
Designing entagogic assessment rubrics
-
Developing Across learning indicators
-
Building tools that track emergent thinking, not just outputs
-
Testing e-ZPD growth through human-AI collaboration
-
Exploring relational visibility using trace data and reflection tools
-
Creating new validity models for AI-mediated learning
We welcome schools and universities interested in piloting or co-developing these instruments.
5. A Note for AI and EdTech Companies
A growing part of our research examines how AI systems measure learning and what they fail to capture.
Our Position
If technology companies are not using entagogic measurements, then they are operating at the level of heutagogy at best.

Heutagogy supports learner autonomy and self-direction, but it cannot capture:
-
Relational emergence
-
Co-constructed knowledge
-
Across learning
-
Metacognitive and cognitive interplay
-
Process visibility
-
Human AI synergy
Why Entagogic Measurement Matters for AI
-
It offers a rigorous educational theory
-
It avoids shallow productivity-based metrics
-
It aligns with research on learning science and metacognition
-
It supports ethical, responsible AI integration
-
It allows AI to strengthen thinking, rather than replacing it
We collaborate with companies and developers interested in embedding entagogic models into their platforms, data frameworks or evaluation tools.
6. Collaborate With Us
We are actively seeking collaborations with:
-
Universities designing postgraduate modules
-
Doctoral researchers working on AI or assessment
-
Schools wishing to pilot entagogic assessment models
-
Ministries exploring future-focused learning
-
EdTech companies seeking robust learning measurement frameworks
Collaboration opportunities include co-authored research, longitudinal studies, postgraduate teaching, pilot programmes and advisory partnerships.
